Located inside the Library on the 2nd floor, PVPL's Seed Library offers a variety of vegetable and herb seeds available for checkout with your Library card. All seeds are non-GMO.
How it Works
- Check out up to three seed packets at a time, per visit. These are yours to keep.
- There are no due dates.
- The seeds with be automatically removed from your account.
- Take up to 3 seed checkout cards to staff at the Information Desk to check out.
- All Star Lettuce Mix
Direct seed in early spring in sun/part shade. Scatter seeds in rows 12" apart and cover lightly with 1/8" soil or less. Begin harvesting leaves at 3 weeks.
- Arugula - Astro Organic
Direct seed in early spring in sun/part shade. Sow 1/8" deep, 3 seeds ever 2" in rows 12" apart, thin plants to every 6" once established.
- Bachelor's Button Mix
A custom blend with flowers in the full range of colors: pink, red, and white with blue predominating. This is also known as Cornflower. Start indoors at 60-65 degrees 2 months before setting out, or direct seed in May in a sunny location.
- Basil - Genovese
Direct seed when soil warms in late spring or transplant after danger of frost in well-drained moderately rich soil. Sow 1/4" deep, cover lightly with soil. Water sparingly at first. Thin to 8-12", top mature plants to induce branching and increase total yield. Harvest before plants blossom. Annual, absolutely intolerant of frost, damaged by temperatures in the mid-30s.
- Beet - Chioggia
Plant 1/2" deep, 1" apart, in rows/beds 12-18" apart, April - July. Thin 2-4" apart. 55 days to maturity.
- Bush Bean (Bush) - Jade Green
Plant 1" deep, 3" apart, in rows 2-3' apart, after danger of frost. 57 days to maturity.
- Calendula (Marigold) Mix
Direct seed in mid to late May in sun/part shade. Sow 1/4" deep, 6-12" apart, in rows 18" apart.
- Chard - Bright Lights
Direct seed in sun/part shade beginning midspring and into midsummer, sow 1/2" deep 4-6" apart.
- Cilantro - Caribe Organic
Direct seed in early spring in sun/part shade. Sow 1/8" deep, 3 seeds every 2" in rows 12" apart, thin plants to every 6" once established.
- Jalapeno Pepper
Start indoors in March or April. 73 days green, 93 days red to maturity. Set outside in June. Very tender, will not tolerate frost. Green peppers, though edible, are not ripe. Peppers ripen to red, yellow, orange. 3,500-6,000 Scovilles at maturity.
- Cucumber - Painted Serpent Long Fruited
May be started indoors for early production, or direct-seeded when soil has warmed. Direct seed 3" apart, thinking to 1' apart in rows 4-6' apart or 6 per mound in hills 4' apart thinning to 3 best plants.
- Nasturtium - Jewel Mix
Full sun. Start indoors or direct seed after last frost. 42 days to maturity. Edible flowers with spicy sweet fragrance lend a peppery-sweet taste to salads. Round leaves also edible. 16" annual.
- Oregano - Greek
Full sun. Start indoors in spring for best results. Seeds will germinate in about two weeks. Plantings (seeds or plants) should be spaced at least 12 inches apart in well-draining soil. Harvest when it is beginning to flower. Grows up to 24 inches.
- Pole Beans - Purple Pod
Plant 3-4" apart along the fence in full sun. Seed depth: 1/2" to 1". Plant spacing: 6-10". Vigorous, long vines need support. Soak seeds overnight and direct seed after last frost. Harvest frequently to keep plants productive.
- Pole Beans - Scarlet Runner
Full sun. Direct seed after last frost. Days to maturity: 70-115. Need trellises, fences, or poles; will grow to 10-12'. Plant 3-4" apart along fence.
- Snap Pea - Cascadia Organic
Plant 3/4" deep, 2" apart, in rows 3" apart, on fence, as soon as ground can be worked.
- Spinach - Bloomsdale Organic
Direct seed in sun/part shade in early spring, late summer, and early fall. Plant 1/2" deep, 1" apart, in rows 12-18" apart. Thin to 2". 42 days to maturity.
- Sunburst Patty Pan Squash
Full sun. 52 days to maturity. Direct seed after last frost or start indoors, 25 days before transplanting. Sow in hills 4' apart, 5 seeds/hill. Thin to 2-3 best plants. Best harvested around 3-4" in diameter.
- Sunflower - Autumn Beauty Organic
Easy to grow. Start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost at temperatures of 65-75 degrees, or direct sow after last frost, 3 to a pocket. Thin to best plant, 1' or more apart. Blossoms 4-6" across are perfect as the center of giant flower arrangements. Annual. 35-40 seeds/g. Especially attractive to pollinators.
- Tomato Heirloom Slicing, Organic
Usually started indoors Feb-April. Minimum germination soil temperature 50 degrees, optimal range 60-85 degrees. Transplant after frost danger has passed.
